Some like it hot, others prefer casual; some debate “slim or baggy?” while others go formal. Fashion is in everyday life.

In recognition of Women’s History Month, Loras Intercultural Programs Office is bringing yet another cultural event to the Loras community and to the public, this time with a new taste – a charity fashion show. Gap, Gap Kids, DBQ Fashions, Cheryl Ann Bridals, Old Navy, Younkers, Tuxedos and numerous other businesses will make appearances on the stage in Marie Graber Ballroom on Saturday, March 13 at 7 p.m.

The sounds of hip hop beats from DJ WebSpinna’s turning table will hit the floor and rock the steps of Duhawk models on that Paris-like night. The show is spiced up with raffle drawings that could give you some cash prizes, movie tickets and car washes, as well as a silent auction with bidding items like a golf foursome, a Younkers personal shopping experience and a Stone Cliff Winery package.

The event will include guest speakers Sue Bushman from the Medical Associates Oncology Department and Sister Carol Karwoski, assistant Director of the YMCA Domestic Violence Program. The proceeds generated through the event will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the local Dubuque YMCA Domestic Violence Program, two vibrant advocates of women’s issues in town.

The event will be followed by an after-party with dance, music and food.

There is always an incentive for those who buy the ticket early. Pre-sale tickets are available at $8 for adults and $5 for students, and the after-show-party will only cost you an extra $2. But hurry! At the door, it will cost you an extra $2.

Pre-sale tickets are available at the Intercultural Programs Office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Or you may contact Mishereen Ellis, the event organizer at 563-588-7936 to reserve your tickets.

The show stands for a cause and it isn’t just about what’s on vogue. As Ellis puts it, “This show will be about more than just clothing! Our main purpose is to educate attendees on issues that are continually affecting women all over the world … and at the same time, be entertained.” So, get informed and get entertained.

‘Provoked’ kicks off Domestic Violence Awareness Month

It might be hard to believe but it’s true that domestic violence touches the lives of Americans of all ages and backgrounds. The month of October is dedicated to creating awareness about domestic violence. Among various programs being designed to mark this month at Loras, the Loras Intercultural Programs is showing a film based on the true story of an Indian girl who ends up being abused by her London-based husband.provoked

Mishereen Ellis, the intercultural projects coordinator, said, “It’s important to shed light on the issue of domestic violence. The movie show and the discussion that follows are aimed at dicussing about this critical issue that touches the everyday life of people, one way or the other.”

Ellis added that she never knew that domestic violence is “rampant” in America. But when she saw a performance by a group called “Healing Waters” in Cedar Rapids during an African-American Women’s Conference, she felt the need of bringing this awareness to college. Ellis plans to invite the group to the college for a performance on domestic violence.

The National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is marked nationwide in October. Various events, small and large, that aim at ending violence within homes and communities are organised nationwide. In 1994 the Violence Against Women Act, championed by then Senator Joe Biden was passed. This strengthened  the concerns regarding this crime and also helped in increasing the services for the victims. Despite this, domestic violence still prevails, leaving a devastating impact on women, men and children in America.

Last week, President Barack Obama released an official proclamation making October 2009 the Domestic Violence Awareness month. His proclamation stressed the prevention of domestic violence by changing attitudes that support violence through education and breaking the cycle of violence.

So, come tonight, October 8th, at 5:30 pm in the Kehl Room for the movie Provoked, the true story of a woman who killed her abusive husband. You can bring your dinner from the pub or the café. Everyone is invited.
