What role do you play while watching a sporting event?
Of course, you cheer and support your team, the exact reason why the Loras cheerleading team and Duhawk Nation came together to organize an amazing one hour event on the 3rd of September for Duhawks to display their school spirit. On Friday night, the Duhawks got a chance to come together and support their team along with our very own Dewey the Duhawk.
The cheerleaders got a chance to involve the audience in activities including tug-of-war, a relay race and a football throwing contest. The football team was introduced and the players played tug-of-war against the cheerleaders. Many audience members participated, including children, making the event even more interesting.
“We had a lot more support than we thought, and I think those who attended really enjoyed themselves,” said sophomore Katie Yockey, a member of the cheerleader team.
The event was organized for the Duhawks to cheer on the football team before Saturday’s season opener.
Cheerleader Erika Hansen, a junior, said, “The main reason behind Duhawk Yell Night was to have the student body come out and show support for the football team before their first home game.”
The cheerleading squad taught the crowd new chants and cheers to yell at the football game on Saturday as well.
Despite being the first yell night at Loras, there was a great deal of enthusiasm for the event and the audience certainly seemed to enjoy making themselves heard.
Audience members also received Loras gifts from the cheerleaders. The entire AWC was filled with fun and yells on Friday night. For those who missed the chance to shout, get ready to yell, as the cheerleaders plan to organize more of these yell nights during homecoming and on the night before the match against the University of Dubuque.
