On the verge of the last week of classes and exam week, most Duhawks just wanted some time to relax in the spring weather and take a break before the final run of studying and sleep deprivation. Enter the annual Spring Dionysia, sponsored by the College Activities Board (CAB). Each day last week, there were activities for the students to do after they were done with the day’s work.
On Monday, grocery bingo was held at the Pub. There were about 85 students playing, and over 20 won prizes. The winnings from the Bingo games were grocery bags containing themed items, from snacks for watching a movie–popcorn, beef jerky, trail mix, and soda–to baking supplies like cake mix, frosting, and candies, to breakfast food such as coffee, pop-tarts and cereal.
On Tuesday there was an ice cream social in the ACC. Vanilla and chocolate ice cream with toppings such as hot fudge, Oreo bits, sprinkles, caramel and whip cream were presented for students to make delicious sundaes with, and then talk with others as they feasted.
On Wednesday there was a stress relief night which featured several activities in the ballroom. One activity available to students was a professional massage–as long as they signed up first. Another activity was the oxygen bar. The oxygen bar had several different flavors to smell, each corresponding to a certain need, such as relaxation, memory, and even the clearing of the sinuses. For those with an artistic vein, there were lots of coloring utensils and paper for students to doodle with, or even make cards for Mother’s Day. Free food was also provided.
On Thursday there was a volleyball tournament outside Byrne Oaks. This tournament was single elimination with eight teams, with the Beastwars defeating the Rumple Blasters 37-23 in the finals. For winning the tournament, the Beastwars were awarded a $75 gift certificate to Happy Joe’s. Punch and treats were given to the spectators. CAB Vice President and sophomore Amber Chambers said, “I enjoy this event because it allows for stress relief during finals by playing a fun game of sand volleyball.”
Finally, on Friday there was a tailgate in the ballroom, which featured treats, inflatable activities, T-shirts, music and a raffle, as well as other activities. The day concluded with the rock band SafetySuit performing in the field house.
With the time to unwind, hopefully the Loras students are ready to prep themselves for the challenges ahead with final papers, presentations and exams.
