In the past ten months that we have been at school, there have been many things in the news that have caught our eye: An earthquake in Haiti, another in Chile, and still another in China; an H1N1 outbreak; and the passage of a health care reformation bill. Here are some not-so-talked-about stories spanning from August to April that might not be as familiar.

  1. Woman killed by her own husband’s coffin – Marciana Silva was riding in her husband’s hearse when another car collided with the hearse, dislodging the coffin in the back, which crushed her.
  2. Girl injured while tweeting in the tub – After her laptop died after a bout of tweeting, she decided to charge ‘er back up by plugging it into the wall. Bad thing was, she was sitting in the bathtub.
  3. Man charged 81 billion dollars for a tank of gas – At a Conoco station in Spokane, Washington, after paying for his gas, a man received a call from his credit card provider asking for approval of an 81,400,836,908 dollar transaction.
  4. Cop impersonator pulls over real cop – In Oakland, California, a man installed flashing lights, a microphone, and speakers to his Crown Victoria in an attempt to pull civilians over in an attempt to rob them.  But, accidentally, he pulled over a real police officer in an unmarked police car.
  5. Teen girl falls down manhole while texting – The manhole on Staten Island was left open for workers to flush out an old sewer line. While the girl only suffered minor bruising, she did get her text sent.
  6. Four-year-old calls 911 for help – Apparently told to call the police if he was in trouble, a young boy decided to do just that, because he needed help…with his math homework. The operator stayed on the line until the boy’s horrified mother came to help instead, apologizing profusely to the operator.
  7. Woody Harrelson  attacks photographer – After shooting the movie “Zombieland,” actor Woody Harrelson was a little delirious when confronted by a photographer at the airport. “I just wrapped a movie called ‘Zombieland,’ in which I was constantly under assault by zombies, then flew to New York, still very much in character,” said Harrelson. “With my daughter at the airport I was startled by a paparazzo, who I quite understandably mistook for a zombie.”
  8. Birthday cake goes sour – Deborah and Heath Campbell were denied a birthday cake for their son by a local baker because the baker did not want to write the boy’s name in the frosting. His name? Adolf Hitler Campbell.
  9. Facebook picture goes global – An American woman who had posted pictures of her family on Facebook received some interesting news when her friend in the Czech Republic called to explain the very samepicture was being used on billboards all around the country.
  10. News station goes down in flames – A news station in Bolivia covered a story of the tragic crash of Air France 447, but instead of using the real footage of the crash, they mistakenly used footage of people being thrown violently from a broken airplane in midair. The footage was taken from a scene in the popular TV series, “Lost.”
  11. Cats help young boy survive – A boy in Argentina went missing for several days, but he survived in a back alley, thanks to the help of a colony of stray felines. The furry saviors brought the boy scraps of food and huddled next to him at night to keep him warm. When a police officer finally found the boy, the cats were still protective and spat at the officer.
