Joe McGerr is currently a Loras senior who will be graduating this May with an English Literature major and a minor in Psychology. However, McGerr has already managed to find a job which began this Monday, March 8. His position is somewhere close to heart, right here at Loras. McGerr is now the Circulation and InterLibrary Loan Coordinator.
Q: What will be your job responsibilities for Circulation and InterLibraryLoan Coordinator?
A: I will be the supervisor of student workers, be responsible for borrowing books from other colleges, and be in charge of hiring students along with my partner Suzanne, who just so happened to be my previous supervisor.
Q: What are the qualifications for this job?
A: You need at least a GED or high school diploma.
Q: How long do you plan on staying here working?
A: I’m not really sure; I’d say at least a few years so I can pay off loans and then go to grad school.
Q: What made you want to apply for this job?
A: I’ve been working here for a little over two years and I really enjoy it. I’m thinking about pursuing my masters in Library Science, so this would be a perfect job to get hands-on experience. I’m only taking 6 credits this semester so I have plenty of time to begin working now.
Q: Since there was so much competition for this job, what assets do you think made you stand out?
There were over 70 applicants and the library staff interviewed 3 of us for the position. I applied at the end of January and submitted my resume and a cover letter. After the staff reviewed 3 of us were individually interviewed by the whole library staff. I think there are several factors. I worked here for a long time so I already know the system. They know I’m a reliable worker so they don’t have to take a chance with someone they don’t know. Also, I heard that I did well in the interview, which was a big determining factor.
