John Mayer’s mouth has been getting him more than Grammy nominations and record deals lately. The recent publication of his now infamous article in Playboy magazine has sparked a firestorm. He’s now being accused of being racist for his use of the N-word and for discussing his “sexual flaunts” in a tasteless manner.
In the March edition of Playboy magazine, Mayer was asked about a wide array of topics, including his past relationships, his love for pornographic materials, and his attraction to black women. His answers to the questions were seen as derogatory and offensive to many, especially black women.
In one answer, he referred to a “hood pass” — a term used to indicate inclusion into the black community — as being on par with a “n—– pass.
His comments on the subject naturally have caused an uproar in the tabloids and throughout the black community. Mayer has tried to dilute the severity of the comment, saying on his Twitter feed that he “was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged.”
In addition to the racial slurs, Mayer touched on his past relationships and sexual history. He described his relationship with Jennifer Aniston as “very deep” and he is “sorry it had to end.” He also mentioned his relationship with Jessica Simpson, where he described Simpson as a “drug,” and explained, “drugs aren’t good for you if you do them too often.”
