Is there anything about Loras College that you think needs to change? President Jim Collins, along with the rest of Loras administration, is constantly trying to improve the school. President Collins is always meeting with Loras alumni, faculty and staff to talk about improvements that can be made, but he now says he wants “to replicate with students what I’m doing with alumni” and gather more of their input as well.
So he is holding a series of breakfasts every other week with Loras students. A random group of about 15 students is selected every two weeks to be invited to breakfast with the president. Thus far, there have been three breakfasts. Collins says, “The purpose for my standpoint is multiple.”
At the breakfasts, which are held in the Mary Alexis room of the ACC, Collins sits down with the students and asks them to tell him anything they might have to say, good or bad, about their Loras experience. The breakfasts are very casual and he is willing and eager to hear students’ ideas.
In addition to hearing students’ input, President Collins also answers any questions that the students might have for him. And when they do, he will often just say, “Call me Jim.”
When I attended a breakfast just a couple weeks ago, he made a point to let students know that he is always interested to hear any questions, concerns or ideas that students have for him. It was a good experience and allowed me to see how the door was being opened to student advice and problems.
