While we all know that Santa’s workshop is located at the North Pole, Santa did stop by and set up shop at Loras on Monday. “Santa’s Workshop” was the kick off of CAB’s Winter Dionysia Week. The event was held Monday from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. in the Pub.

The festivities included Christmas-themed crafts, spontaneous themed caroling, cookie decorating, and of course, pictures with Santa. “After Thanksgiving I’m all about the Christmas mood,”said Zach Jakaitis, who portrayed Santa Claus for the event.

The event was sponsored by the Student Union and run by the CAB Traditions Committee. CAB representative Amber Chambers, said, “It was set up specifically so that students could come in and out at their leisure.” It was thus able to be enjoyed by many students. “It’s a break from studying,” said sophomore Kathy Klostermann. “I’m so excited they put this on,” first-year Meghan Delaney said as she painted a penguin shaped ornament. “The arts and crafts take me back to my childhood.”

All of the activities were thoroughly enjoyed, but the main attraction was an event not usually associated with Christmas: a pie eating contest. A crowd gathered ‘round as six young men sat in front of their chocolate cream pies. Not many were up to the challenge, but Johnny Jackson, Jake Regan, Dan McDermott, Niel Mohlman, Mike McCarty, and Pat McCarty were. Each contestant sat before his pie clutching his fork. The rules were explained: the winner would be the first contestant to finish their pie, excluding crust. CAB representative, Amber Chambers, served as judge. “Can we get a straw?” inquired McDermott as each contestant tried to figure out a strategy. Chambers said “go!” and the race was on. Some chose to eat with a fork, while others attempted the face-in-pie method. While all ate diligently, only one could be called victor. After a few messy minutes, Pat McCarty finished his pie and was declared winner, earning a $15.00 Wal-Mart gift card. “It wasn’t easy, but the McCartys are natural eaters,”the winner declared.

“Santa’s Workshop” was enjoyed by all and will most likely become a Christmas tradition, Chambers said. What was the best part about the event? “Everyone’s sharing and having fun,” said first-year, Sara Castillo.

If you missed “Santa’s Workshop,” don’t worry; there are plenty of Christmas activities going on around campus including cookie decorating Thursday, December 3rd from 8 p.m.-9 p.m. in the ballroom, and Dionysia Softball Friday, December 4th from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. in the Rockbowl.
