Not into the Christmas spirit just yet?
The Loras College Choirs and Wind Ensemble can help you with that, as they are gearing up to perform two concerts to jump-start the holiday season.
The first concert, “Mysteries of Christmas,” will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in Christ the King Chapel. The second one, “Sounds of the Season,” will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec 12, at the Fieldhouse.
So, why have two concerts?
Both performances will celebrate the Christmas season, and both will involve many of the same performers. Wind Ensemble, Concert choir, Con Brio (men’s choir), Bella Voce (women’s choir), and Chamber Singers will all be featured at each performance.
But the two concerts will go about it in different ways.
As it has for the past few years, “Mysteries of Christmas” will feature religious music. This year’s lineup will include Christmas classics, such as “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night,” as well as some pieces from Handel’s “Messiah” and from other choral and instrumental arrangements. Various readings will be sprinkled into the event to accentuate a peaceful, meditative atmosphere.
The “Sounds of the Season” has a longer tradition at Loras, stretching back about 35 years, according to Bruce Kotowich, professor of choral activities. It will feature a lineup of upbeat, cheerful crowd-pleasers and secular Christmas favorites. The choirs will sing songs such as “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Deck the Halls” and “Sleigh Ride.”
Also during “Sounds of the Season,” the Wind Ensemble will perform a variety of pieces, including the Christmas classic “Themes from the Nutcracker.” Also, be sure to bring your Christmas wish list, because rumor has it that Santa might appear at the concert …
