If you were anywhere near The Pub last Friday night, you would have heard Libbie Schrader pounding out music on her keyboard and guitar.

Schrader was the musical artist most recently brought to campus. Along with her concert in The Pub, she also played at the University of Dubuque and at Clarke College over the weekend. Staying in a small city like Dubuque to play three concerts in a row was a new experience for the performer. She is used to playing at large venues in large cities across the nation.

Schrader played a large array of songs that ranged from low-key songs to goofy and upbeat ones. The enthusiasm and excitement that she exhibited made the concert particularly entertaining.libbieschrader

Along with her own music, she played a few covers. She ended with “Don’t Stop Believing,” originally recorded by Journey, which turned out to be a big hit among those in attendance. Her songs are featured regularly in a wide variety of MTV shows, such as “True Life: I’m an Alcoholic” and “Engaged and Underage.” She even has appeared on an episode of the television show “Gilmore Girls.”

When Schrader entered Loras, she noticed the numerous crosses and crucifixes placed throughout the campus. She said her faith means a lot to her and she tries to incorporate that in her music. Although her music might not be considered Christian music, the faith is there. The lyrics of one of her songs goes: “The path of my soul lies beyond my control; all I can do is listen and pray.” To Schrader, writing and performing her music is her way of living out her faith.

Schrader grew up in Oregon with just one sibling, a sister who she now lives with in Brooklyn, NY. She once lived in Los Angeles, but she wanted to live in San Francisco. So she “did a Frank Sinatra” and wrote a song about the city, which she performed on Friday night.

She said she started singing, playing and performing in high school. During her college years, she formed a band with some college friends. After the group won a contest, it landed a chance to be a part of Jewel’s “Soul City Café” program and opened three shows on her tour.

Schrader has three albums to her credit, the last one being a self-titled album released in 2007.
