“Zombieland” takes place during a post-zombie epidemic in the United States. The story follows an anxiety-ridden college student who goes by the name of Columbus for the entirety of the movie.
Columbus attributes his survival to a long list of rules that he constantly refers to. One such rule is the “double tap,” where he shoots a zombie twice just to make sure it’s dead. Columbus soon meets up with a mysterious man that calls himself “Tallahassee.” The man has a burning hatred towards the zombies and brutally kills them every chance he gets. The two men team up and, despite their seemingly opposite personalities, they discover that they have more in common than they first realized.
Zombieland is comedic gold. It will have you laughing out loud during many of its sometimes wildly over-the-top scenes. Not only are the characters perfect for their roles, but the actors and actresses truly deliver.
The movie moves at a decent pace and no details are left out. One of the main jokes in the movie is listening to Columbus go through his list of rules and then anxiously cope with situations as they arrive. It’s nice to see little things like this throughout the movie that keep the movie fast-paced, with no boring or sluggish scenes.
I would like to give a warning to those who do not enjoy movies with blood and gore, as there is plenty in Zombieland. In the first few scenes alone, there is enough carnage to put “Inglourious Basterds” to shame.
All in all, Zombieland has no significant weaknesses and it provides plenty of laughs, making it a must-see movie for 2009. To quote the movie: “It’s time to nut up or shut up.”
