Duhawks Leave Nothing but Beaver Bones

This past Saturday, the women’s soccer team dominated Buena Vista University, 8-0. This is a score rarely achieved in soccer, where a score of 2-0 is considered a blowout.

The Duhawks were able to fight their way to victory, even though it meant missing the Homecoming festivities on campus, and a four-hour bus ride to boot.

“It was great to get all those goals and get the confidence going into our stretch of conference games, so I’m pleased with them,” said Coach Dan Rothert.

There were a couple players who stuck out in Rothert’s mind as going above and beyond his expectations. One was sophomore Kate Young, who was able to score a goal and dish out two assists. The other was first-year Hillary Wilson, who scored the first two goals of her career.

“The team is learning from every mistake.” Rothert said. “We’re getting better every game. We’re certainly improving as the season’s going on. Our goal is to reap the benefits of all our hard work at the end of the season. Our sights are set on a conference championship.”

Last week, prior to the shellacking of Buena Vista, Loras lost to Augustana. Rothert still had almost nothing but praise for his team.

“I think we had our chances,” he said. “It was a very even game. Shots were about the same, we both had a lot of the same chances. No one team seemed to have control over the other. Realistically; we thought it could have ended in a 0-0 game. But unfortunately they got a couple that we wish we could have back.”

Unfortunately, the breaks just didn’t go their way, and there was a little miscommunication, Rothert said. There was a mixup of who was going after the ball at one point, and the other team got it.

“Just things we need to fix,” he said. “All in all, I thought we played very well against the Augustana team, who was undefeated. We’ve played a very tough schedule. It propelled us to get things going in the conference season, which obviously started great with the next game as the 8-0 win on Saturday.”

The women will host its next Iowa Conference opponent, Central, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Rock Bowl
