“1+6=7 on May 8th.”

The first time I saw this poster at the lobby inside Rohlman, I figured there was going to be some mathematical conference or workshop at the college. Then a friend beside me jumped with excitement: EVE 6 is coming? To Loras?

Yes, during Springfest, the College Activity Board (CAB) has booked two renowned alternative bands for May 8. Then a few days ago, Core Team of Campus Ministry and CAB collaborated to bring Hollywood Burnout, a Des Moines-based band formerly known as Little Mojo, to the campus on May 1.

As the finals approach us, the coming two Friday nights promise to be fun. Here are some words on the bands:

Hollywood Burnout (formerly Little Mojo): Friday, May 1, 7 p.m., ACC Ballroom

Acoustic-rock band from Des Moines was formed by two brothers, Josh and Nicholas Sinclair, in 1998. The band has toured throughout the U.S. with other bands like Ben Folds Five and Shannon Curfman, among others. Jason Mraz, Dashboard Confessional and Dave Matthews are some of the inspirations for the band. Josh is a multi-instrumentalist and tastefully incorporates new sounds to the band’s songs, while Nick is the drummer, percussionist and backing vocalist.

Recently, the band was joined by bassist Seth Hoveland. Frontman Josh said that the band was looking for something a bit edgier to reflect its new music. The band has sold more than 10,000 copies of their three earlier recordings without any previous label support. Little Mojo came up with its first studio effort, the “Awake and Dreaming E.P.”, in late 2003. The group has been working to release its first full-length album, “Red Light Go.”

Influences: Hanson, Ryan Adams, Automatic Black, Evan & Jaron, The Verve, Counting Crows, Secondhand Serenade, Chris Glover, Palomino, Dashboard Confessional, Ben Harper, Blind Melon, Damien Rice, Sanctus Real, Teitur, etc.

Jupiter One: Friday, May 8, 7 p.m. at the Fieldhouse

This band is well-known, especially among lovers of video games. Most of its tracks have been used in Electronic Arts video games. “Countdown,” “Turn up the Radio,” “Fire Away” and “Unglued” have been featured in Madden NFL ’08, NHL ’08, Burnout Paradise and FIFA ’08.

The indie-rock band, based out of Brooklyn, NY, was formed in 2003 by K Ishibashi (vocal, guitar) and Zac Colwell (keyboard). They later were joined by Mocha (keyboard, violin), Dave Heilman (drums) and Pat Dougherty (bass). They say they inject “colorless indie rock with a bracing rhythmic pulse, two-fisted pop hooks and East Coast swagger.” Their music has been compared with that of The Killers, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. Their track “Platform Moon” was used in a commercial for Mazda cars and is on the most recent FIFA ’09.

Influences: Talking Heads, The Cars, The Police, ELO, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Yes, Gang of Four, David Bowie, 20th Century Classical music, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, The Stills, Sigur Ros, Nick Drake, The Beatles (of course), Blonde Redhead, James Brown, Shuggie Otis, Marvin Gaye, Radiohead, Grandaddy, The Flaming Lips, Prince.

EVE 6: Friday, May 8, 7 p.m.-11 p.m. at the Fieldhouse

Many students are excited about this band. The alternative-rock trio from Southern California is most well-known for their hits “Inside Out,” “Leech ” and “Here’s to the Night.” The band, formerly called Eleventeeen, was founded by guitarist Jon Siebels and bassist/vocalist Max Collins when they were freshmen in high school.

Eve 6 scored three top-40 singles during the late ’90s and early 2000s. The band leaped into the limelight with its song “Inside Out” from the debut album “Eve 6” in 1998. The song outdid “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls to become a No. 1 hit atop the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Moreover, the success of “Inside Out,” along with follow-up singles “Leech,” “Open Road Song” and “Tongue-Tied,” along with an opening slot on tour with Third Eye Blind, pushed Eve 6 to platinum status by August 1998. Then “Here’s to the Night” became a hit in 2001.

The band dissolved in 2004 after doing a final show in July in St. Louis. Jon Sibels joined Monsters Are Waiting, while Collins and Fagenson resurfaced with their new band, The Sugi Tap, in 2006. Then in October 2007, after making an announcement that they were reuniting and that Jon Siebels wouldn’t be joining them, Matt Blair joined the band. In Virginia they played their first show in three years.

Influences: Music.Life.Everything.
